What to do if a dog has an ear hematoma?

An ear hematoma refers to a blood clot formed by the rupture of large blood vessels in the ear, with blood pooling between the ear cartilage and skin. It mostly occurs on the inner surface of the ear pinna, and can also be found on the outer surface or both sides.

Cause Investigation

  1. Trauma: Compression, contusion, scratching, biting, or other injuries to the ear pinna can lead to an ear hematoma.
  2. Ear disorders: Conditions like otitis externa cause ear itching, prompting the animal to shake its head vigorously and damage blood vessels.
  3. Parasites: Such as ticks.

Solutions

  1. Small hematomas can heal on their own without intervention.
  2. Large hematomas require surgical incision to drain the accumulated blood.

Prevention Measures

  1. Prevent trauma: Use a leash when taking pets outdoors. Seek immediate veterinary care if an injury occurs.
  2. Prevent parasitic infections.
  3. Avoid tick bites: Minimize the pet’s time playing in grassy areas.
  4. Use an Elizabethan collar for pets that scratch their ears excessively.

Important Reminder

During postoperative care, monitor the incision for proper healing. If the wound heals but fluid buildup cannot drain, the ear will become swollen again.
