What causes a dog to sneeze?

The sneeze reflex is a defensive response triggered by nasal mucosa irritation. When the nasal lining is stimulated, the dog inhales sharply, followed by a forceful expulsion of air through the nostrils with a distinct sound.

Cause Investigation

  1. Allergies
  2. Colds (the most common cause)
  3. Occasional sneezing: May result from sudden temperature changes
  4. Inhalation of loose fur during shedding season
  5. Early-stage canine distemper

Solutions

  1. For allergies: Remove the allergen immediately. Severe cases require anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory treatment.
  2. For colds caused by temperature fluctuations: Provide warmth, enhance nutrition, and administer anti-inflammatory care for mild symptoms. Improvement or recovery usually occurs within a week.
  3. For unvaccinated dogs: Rule out canine distemper by taking the dog to a vet for relevant examinations.
  4. Occasional sneezing generally resolves on its own without intervention.

Prevention Measures

  1. Avoid exposing your dog to irritants such as chili peppers and green onions.
  2. Maintain proper warmth, especially when the weather changes drastically.
  3. Ensure your dog receives a complete vaccination schedule.

Important Reminder

If your dog’s persistent sneezing does not improve, consult a veterinarian for a thorough check-up and treatment.
